A terrific group of items from the prime period of decorated US sprinter Isabelle Daniels' storied career. Sadly, many today have not heard her name. If she had not been injured and unable to participate in the 1960 Summer Olympics, her name might be up there with the legendary Wilma Rudolph, who was her teammate at Tennessee State, and on the US Team at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and the 1959 Pan American games in Chicago. At that games, Daniels won Gold in the 60m and 4 x 100 Relay, and Silver in the 200m, outpacing Rudolph who won Silver in the 100m and shared Gold with Daniels in the 4 x 100 Relay. Rudolph went on to fame with three Gold at the 1960 Summer Games. No one knows how Daniels would have fared had she been able to participate, but her career was exemplary. She did win an Olympic medal, Bronze, at Melbourne 1956, in the 4 x 100 Relay, with Wilma Rudolph as a teammate. She was part of history as a member of the first all-black US sprinting team. She appeared to have won Bronze in the 200m but a photo finish put her in 4th. At the second-ever Pan American games, held in Mexico City in 1955, Daniels won Gold in the 4 x 100 Relay and Silver in the 60m. In 1957, she set a world record in the 50-yard dash and she still held that record at the end of her amateur career. She was, for a time, considered the fastest woman in the world. In 1958 she participated in a goodwill tour that covered eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. At Tennessee State, the Tigerbelles under legendary coach Ed Temple (44 years at TSU, Head Coach of Women's US track and field team at 1960 and 1964 Olympics) were a sprinting powerhouse. TSU won the National AAU Women's Championship every year that Daniels attended the university. She won 5 outdoor and 7 indoor National AAU Championship Gold medals in her college career. (Seven of these, won in 1958 and 1959, are offered separately). After school, Daniels' career was more important than her career as an athlete. She became a high school physical education teacher and track and basketball coach in her native Georgia for 37 years, and in that time, received numerous accolades including Coach of the Year in 1990 from the National High School Athletic Coaches Association. Her high school teams were Georgia state champions a number of times. This small group of four items comes from that 1958 Goodwill Tour in summer of that year. The tour saw the United States men and women track teams engage in dual meets in Warsaw, Poland and Moscow, Soviet Union (they also made stops in Budapest, Hungary and Athens, Greece). It was a historic event, as it was the first time, as the Cold War with the Soviet Union was heating up, that US and Soviet athletes would hold a dual meet (instead of just competing on the larger stage of the Olympic Games and international events open to the world). These dual meets would take place yearly until 1966, when the Russians backed out in a political statement. Unfortunately, at the time, very little attention was paid, and financial resources given, to US women athletic organizations, so complete records of the 1958 Goodwill Tour results don't exist. But, this competition and those in the coming years drew attention to the second-class status US women had always been treated with, and things began to slowly change. This lot consists of the Gold medals won by Isabelle Daniels in the 200 meters and the 4 x 100 meters Relay, at the USA-Poland meet in Warsaw, August 1-2, 1958, and the Gold medal won by Isabelle Daniels in the 4 x 100 meters Relay, along with an enameled pin, from the USA-Soviet dual meet in Moscow, July 27-28, 1958. Disclaimer: Dimensions and weights of individual medals were supplied by the source of these items and are assumed to be accurate. In any event, their intrinsic precious metal values are a fraction of the historic value of these pieces, and the buyer agrees to accept them with this understanding. The two Gold medals from the USA-Poland meet, with their original presentation boxes, are gold-plated silver. Each measures 50mm in diameter and weighs 53g. The medals are in excellent to near mint condition; one does have a small spot of tarnish showing through the gold plating. The presentation boxes are in very good condition. The fronts show a hurdler surrounded by the words 'POLSKA-USA WARSZAWA 1-2 VIII 1958'. Each reverse is engraved with the outcome '1 Miejsce' (1st Place) with the event engraved beneath. Isabelle Daniels, Lucinda Williams, Margaret Matthews and Barbara Jones were the team for the 4 x 100 meters Relay on the tour. The enameled Gold medal from the USA-Soviet meet is a big one. It is gold-plated bronze with an enameled front, as was the Soviet custom in medal-making for many, many years. It measures 85mm in diameter, 3.5mm thick and weighs 112g. The front shows a discuss thrower between US and Soviet flags, around which the rough translation is 'Athletic Competitions USA – Soviet Union July 27-28 Moscow'. The reverse is engraved and the Cyrillic script translates to 'For First Place in the relay 4 x 100m.' The pin, also enameled, shows the US and Soviet flags with the same discuss thrower, 'Moscow 1958' and at the bottom, 'Athletic Competitions'. The medal is in very good condition with medium handling wear and some toning to the reverse. The large red presentation box with velveteen interior is in Very Good condition. The pin is very nice and its plastic presentation box is Very Good. Isabelle Daniels' husband the Rev. Sidney Holston has signed the Letter of Authenticity that covers the lot. As such, I do not wish to break the lot up. These are important pieces of US women's sports history. Material from the heyday of the Tennessee Lady Tigers is not often seen.
