Although Birma/Myanmar is most known for rubies and Spinels in limestone, likely the best in the world… similar geologic environments have been found elsewhere and yielded similar mineralization, like Pakistan, Nepal, etc… During the 90's, Luc Yen, in a bucolic green valley in the heart of northern Vietnam, all of a sudden started to produce Rubies and Spinels, first from gravels in rice paddies as loose crystals, but later from the surrounding carst mountains in altered limestone/marble deposits, very similar to Myanmar indeed, although maybe not quite to the level of Myanmar… has. Luc Yen has become much more known over the past years, and produced good gemstones of both Ruby and Spinel, and some other species as well… Lesser known, and also similar to Myanmar, sometimes the Spinel crystals can become very complex, where the original octahedron shape becomes altered, almost to a skeletal formation. Some of the Spinel crystal clusters from Vietnam can reach large size as well, and make great mineral specimens. Here you see a good example of that material. This "behemoth" might not be the prettiest Spinel, but it is a positively large crystal with all kinds of complex crystal features, where the octahedron shape is present, but so distorted in places, as to make this almost an abstract piece. Also, this brown/orange color is not that common in Spinel. There is one contact point on the cluster, but otherwise this is a very intriguing Spinel specimen with many odd and fascinating crystallization features. Again, quite large for the species, and unusual and nice for the locality of Luc yen. This specimen is 345 grams, or 12 1/4 oz. The size is 3.5 inch x 2.9 inch x 1.5 inch.
