Son of IBM Corporation founder Thomas J. Watson, he was the 2nd company president (1952–71), and the 16th United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union (1979–81). He received many honors during his lifetime, including being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964. He is a popular lecturer, having made more than one hundred presentations at universities, cultural institutions and conferences. He was historical consultant for the film Olmsted and Central Park, produced by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, and for a subsequent film by PBS, Frederick Law Olmsted and the Public Park in America. He has also served as consultant for some forty preservation and restoration projects of Olmsted-designed landscapes.
