FEATURED IS A CIRCA 1900 PRIVATE MAILING CARD / POSTCARD OF THE ROBERT E LEE MANSION AT ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY … THE HOUSE WAS KNOWN AS ARLINGTON HOUSE. Arlington House was built by George Washington's stepson/grandson (it's a bit complicated), George Washington Parke Custis, as both a memorial to the man that adopted and raised him, George Washington, and as a personal residence. He built it on the plantation which came to him upon his 21st birthday from his biological father, John Parke Custis, who was Martha Washington's first husband. It took almost two decades to complete, from 1802-1818. The designer / architect, George Hadfield, also left his mark on the U.S. Capitol. Custis' daughter married Robert E. Lee which is how it became to be known as General Lee's mansion. Of note, as a result of a suit filed by the Lee family, the U.S. Supreme Court found, in 1882, that the property, to include all that we now know as Arlington Nat'l Cemetery, was confiscated from the Lees without due compensation. The Lee family never returned to Arlington and, in 1883, George Washington Custis Lee, Robert E. Lee's son, sold the house and approximate 1,000 acres that comprised the estate back to the U.S. Government for $150,000.
