A Key to the Disunion Conspiracy. The Partisan Leader. Secretly Printed in Washington (in the year 1836) by Duff Green, for Circulation in the Southern States, but Afterwards Repressed. Tucker, Beverly. New York: Reprinted by Rudd & Carleton, 1861. This is the grandfather of Civil War novels. It was written as an anti-Jackson and Van Buren document in the guise of fiction and published surreptitiously in Washington in 1836, with a fictitious imprint. It describes a war centering in the southwestern mountains of Virginia in which the South is victorious. It was republished in New York in 1861 as anti- Confederate propaganda and then in Richmond in 1862 as pro- Confederate propaganda. The Southern Literary Messenger declared in 1862 (XXXIV, 400): '"The Partisan Leader" supplies a great desideratum. It answers all the requirements of the public taste at this time. Interesting as a novel, surprising as a work of prophecy, and invaluable as an incentive to the prosecution of the existing struggle, and as an assurance of our ultimate success, it cannot fail to meet with universal favor.'" The Partisan Leader seems to be the only work, with the exception of the Bible and some religious tracts, which was used as propaganda by both North and South"–Cornerstones of Confederate Collection. This is the first NY reprint edition. Maroon blindstamped covers, gilt title to the spine slightly faded, light wear eternally with slme sunning and chipping. Internally with light staining; signed in a few places, as shown. Hinges starting but intact. A real gem!
